Tap Forms Organizer and Secure Database App Recensioni

Sto avendo enormi problemi a sincronizzare i dati tra computer, Ipad e Iphone. Non dovrebbe essere così…!!!! Almeno questo è quanto promesso dal programma. È una fregatura o si pone rimedio???????

SOLDI BUTTATI VIA

Crash continuo

Doesn’t sync consistently

The app works at first, then over time degrades and becomes unusable. The developer wants you to solve the problem by purchasing their new apps. Stay away from this company. They should just charge a premium for their app instead of using the model of upgrading you to a working version of their software.

Good functionality…until you can’t use it anymore??

I paid $50 for this app. I bought it because I needed a tool to help me track mileage for business and taxes. Once I bought a new iphone and had to setup sync again, I learned that I needed to “Upgrade to the newest version”. So, I’m looking for an update and the only one is BUY THE NEWEST VERSION FOR ANOTHER $50. I already bought your program! I don’t get any additional support for that cost?

Decent app

I have used this app for a couple of years now and it has always worked as advertised. iCloud sync works great. When the developer released version 5 he dropped iCloud sync for no reason whatsoever. I can understand dropping DropBox if DropBox was no longer supporting such applications, but there was no reason for dropping iCloud. As I mentioned, I have never had any problems with iCloud syncing. I will not sign up for a paid service to sync. Even if I never used enough data to be charged by IBM, I do not like having my credit card information unnecessarily stored by online entities. The WiFi sync is an option for version 5, but it is inconvenient. When the developer returns iCloud syncing to Tap Forms, then I will upgrade. I would give this 4 stars if it weren’t for the syncing omission in version 5.

I’ll be going now

Update: As you can read I got away from Tap Forms awhile back due to sync issues etc. Well, I came back to give it another try, and as of today, all of my saved files are gone. This time, gone for good. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I really like the concept of this app, and have been using it for months, both business and personal. The syncing has always been a little wonky, but I have worked through that, until today. Today the syncing cost me a significant spreadsheet. Shame on me for not having an independent backup. I’ve lost data before that I have recovered, but it looks like I’m out of luck this time. I’ll be moving to another app. I’ll be monitoring this app, and hope to return someday, but for now, I must be going ...

Decent DB App with Very Poor Syncing Capability

I have both Mac and iOS apps. The entire sync mechansim between Mac and iOS is cumbersome and not intuitive and if you are not careful you could inadvertently overwrite your database on your MAc with an older version from your iOS device or vice versa.. I think the Mac version is fine by itself though and much safer to use without the iOS version. In fact I strongly reccommend only getting either the Mac or the iOS versions but not using both together. Now there are new versions of both the Mac and iOS apps that still do not support sync properly - no Dropbox or iCloud support at all and the reasoning behind this does not make sense to me. There are numberous apps that use Dropbox sync that were just released and I do not agree with the developers reasoning to use a sync service no one has ever heard of before in the new version which WILL cost you money if you go over a certain data threshold each month! I am not upgrading again until a standard sync service like Dropbox is used. One specific app that I own versions of on both the Mac and iOS works flawlessly with Dropbox and also uses a database to store it’s data so I am not satisfied with this decision. This app was released a week ago.

Was Good DB App

I recently came to realize this version is now tecchincally out of date, as there is a seprate version 5 build. Unfortuatnly the new build requires yet another cloud service, as if I don’t already subscribe to enough. The new service REQUIRES a credit card to sign up, even though you *may* never be charged. This is a lot more than I want to deal with, so it’s time to move on and find yet another database application to replace this one.

A winner…

Love the flexibility and ease the use of this app. Wherever I had questions, I found that the developer already posted answers for on the internet. Form creation was easy, adding fields was easy, love the field types and the connection to contacts, and editing drop downs was simple. My one wish, synch forms and records between users real time versus just iCloud. With that said, I easily exported the forms and records to another user and they will be the master record keeper for a specific form we are using. I rarely write review but this one deserves two thumbs up!

Intuitive and easy to use. Bye bye Bento!

I bought this after learning that Bento was being discontinued, and needing to find an alternative where I could migrate my Bento databases. For someone who is an artist and not an expert in database creation I can say It has been effortless to migrate my data from Bento over to Tap Forms. Plus, it adds functionality that I never had in Bento, like creating custom labels that really allow me to edit the layout and output to a much finer degree. I have been really pleased with this software so far.

Extremely flexible, useful and fast support!

This is a fantastic and powerful CRM application that I use on my MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone. Very easy to customize and use, extremely powerful, easy to learn and outstanding support that you won’t find anywhere else! Easy to sync. Very inexpensive. Keeps track of all your records, can set appointments and reminders and has many different features! Absolutely FANTASTIC!

User friendly database for non-techies

This app has become indispensable to me since the disappointing demise of Bento. It's pretty simple as databases go so you don't have to be a genius. The best thing is that Brendan is SO responsive when I have a question. It is so rare to get help from a developer that I give apps 100 extra points for that. I use TF to keep info on a variety of subjects, e.g. room reservation clients, medical providers, stores, and restaurants. I use Evernote too, for free form info but Tap Forms is better for more structured uses. I’m syncing with the iPhone using Dropbox and it works well most of the time.

Fastest support response ever.

Great app and great support!

Great replacement for Bento

Actually this app is better then Bento. I just wish I had found it before I threw out all my Bento databases. The rogram world great. Support is great. I work a lot with databases and have been trying out many and some of them were good some ok but none of them even come close to Tap Forms. Very easy to use, relational tables and easy to customize.

Great for organizing

This app is great for organizing really anything. Contacts, inventories, notes, etc. It’s obvious the developer has put a lot of hard work into it, and continues to. He’s very quick to respond on inquiries and always seems to be working on new features. There should be Dropbox syncing sometime soon, which I’m excited about. Really the only thing I want to see in this app, which will make me use it for real, is the ability to encypt file attachments. Right now, all it encrypts is the database. I would like to use Tap Forms to go paperless, but it’s kind of pointless when none of the scanned valuable documents can be encrypted. Or if I have a business client database, I can’t encrypt important file attachments such as contracts, financial documents, etc. It would also be extremely useful it it could let you have multiple databases. Right now, there isn’t a way to have distinctly seperate databases and which you can encrypt independently.

Great Simple Database App

I use TapForms to keep records of those who attend our church. Although I am not a programmer, the simplicity of TapForms allowed me to create my own customized database that contains precisely the information I need including names, photos, cell phone numbers, addresses, birthdates, anniversaries, baptism dates, a record of correspondence, and so on. I not only keep these records on my MacBook Pro, but through the Cloud can easily access them on my iPad and my iPhone. Thus, these records go with me wherever I go and can be updated after a meeting with someone for coffee. Moreover, when I have had more complex questions not answered by the “help” menu, the TapForms staff have promptly responded with easy to understand answers. I looked at and tried a variety of database applications for our church. One cloud based database application cost per month what TapForms costs to use on my MacBook Pro forever. None worked as well as TapForms. I highly recommend TapForms.

More than I expected

Like so many who have used a number of Mac databases over the years, Bento has been my go-to for the past couple of years. Their end of support left me with several large files that wouldn’t go with me to El Capitan. Google led me to Tap Forms. The selling point was the conversion of Bento files. The price was right to give it a try, but I admit to thinking it would be a hassle if it worked at all. I downloaded the Tap Form manual, bought the app. Surprise. The conversion went really well. So I started playing with the forms, layouts, etc. All good. Then I tried to compose and print mailing labels. And tried. And tried. Hit all sorts of issues. Decided to use the email support offered in the manual and online. Wow. Bendan Duddridge has to have the best customer service in the business. At least, that has been my experience. I contacted him (on a Sunday evening yet!) and he walked me through my problems. Okay, have to say it took more than one email to get clarity on some how-tos (and I thought I knew databases) but he was prompt, polite, and patient in getting me to where I needed to be. I found out later that he was even fielding some of my inquiries while he was at dinner with family. Above and beyond; I wouldn’t have expected that. The manual for Tap Forms 3 is very helpful though it didn’t really get me all the steps I needed. I could be wrong, but it seems there’s the assumption the user will be able to fill in the blanks. Maybe some can. I couldn’t. But as soon as I got the stuff between the blanks, all came together. I’m using two Macs now in separate offices; only one is using El Capitan. My plan is to get all my Bento stuff to Tap Forms, go El Cap on Mac 2, and leave Bento behind. Hopefully with no regrets. Bottom line: the support I received was exceptional and I look forward to exploring the many capabilities of this app. So far, impressive. I look forward to seeing the manual and other support avenues grow.

Excellent database for the rest of us

A long-time FileMaker Pro user, life changes made paying for the expensive upgrades unecessary, so I was very happy switching to Bento when it was released. I used it every day to track my home inventory, an ever growing list of botanicals, medical data, and landscape maintenance clients including linked botanicals associated with each property, irrigation stations, diary and to-do lists. The Mac, iPhone and iPad apps worked sufficiently well thru El Capitan and iOS9, as did the sync functionality, but were starting to show signs of incompatility. So, I downloaded the FileMaker Pro trial version, thinking it would instantly be familiar again (like riding a bicycle). Not so. In fact, I had become so “spoiled” using a simple-to-setup and use database system, FileMaker seemed unbelieveablhy tedious and antiquated. Adding salt to the wound, the latest version of FileMaker Pro killed the Bento import capability, leaving me no choice but to recreate my solutions from scratch. Even using one of their ready-made templates proved too difficult, not to mention creating an iOS layout. Uggghhh. Thankfully, I discovered the very reasonably priced and capable Tap Forms. First, it imported ALL my Bento databases beautifully, including the extensive linked botanical files for my landscape clients. Secondly, the learning curve proved to be far more minimal than anticipated. Third, my databases were back up and running with the Mac and iOS versions in a matter of two days…something I never achieved with FileMaker after two weeks. Fourth, it syncs to either iCloud or Dropbox. Fifth (and perhaps most important), the developer is unbelieavably quick in responding to queries and providing bug fixes via updates. Having used Tap Forms extensively for over three months I’m very pleased and highly recommend it! The one area an improvement would be welcome is printing spreadsheet-style list reports. However, print format capabilities far exceed those in Bento. Tap Forms is a very capable and full-featured database solution for “the rest of us.” Give it a try!

Really does what I need it to do

I came to Tapforms as a refugee from Bento, and am finding it a great improvement. I found the built-in forms to be pretty good, but it is also very flexible if you make your own. Sync through iCloud has occasionally been buggy, but always works out in the end anyway, even when there are glitches. Support is very quick - send in a comment or email, and you receive a reply very quickly. It does the job very well.

Perfect for my needs!

I’ve been using databases all the way back to Appleworks on a IIe, then it was on to Microsoft Works until that program was no longer developed. Next was Filemaker Pro, but it wasn’t intuitive and had more bells and whistles than I needed. Bento was okay, but then it went away. I’m a songwriter (lyricist), and recently I was going through my archives and saw that I had assigned some songs to a music publisher back in the 1980s that I had completely forgotten about. For that and other reasons, I decided it was time to get everything in order—but what database to use? Not really expecting to find anything, I searched the App Store…and found a gem! Tap Forms is just what I needed. I have fields for Song Title, Cowriter (as a lyricist, I always have a cowriter who writes the melody), Publishers, year written, copyright information (including an image of the copyright certificate), BMI information, a lyric file attachment, audio file attachment, recording history, etc. Some of my songs have been recorded multiple times, and it’s easy to add multiple file capability to a field. I’m sure I’ll be adding fields as I discover the need. Tap Forms gives me the ability to have all the information I need on every song I’ve ever written, and I can have all of that with me at all times with the companion iPhone iOS app and synching via iCloud Drive. Often an app is only as good as its support—I can tell you first-hand that the developer support for Tap Forms is outstanding. When I first downloaded Tap Forms and started experimenting with it, I found a feature I thought was lacking and sent a suggestion to the developer. He not only responded quickly ON A SUNDAY, but he also gently pointed out that the feature I thought was lacking was actually present in Tap Forms, and could be done several different ways. I have never experienced such a prompt and friendly reply from a software or app developer. He is also quick to fix a bug, as evidenced by this update—he fixed it immediately, and the only delay was the time it took for Apple to process the update. Tap Forms is inexpensive, intuitive, and easy to use. As I get deeper into it, I know I’ll be discovering and using more of its features and expanding my use of it to a number of other things in my life that I want to organize. I love this app!

Fantastic Fully Featured Database App for Personal or Business Use

Updated Review: Remains a 5 Star app I am very pleased with. I use Tap Forms daily and have not encountered a single problem with it. I’ll leave my former review below which still applies to this version. I’d highly encourage anyone needing a database app for Mac to have a good look at this. The developer is very helpful if you have any issues and does a great job of continuing to improve Tap Forms over time. I recommend Tap Forms very highly. This latest update again shows how dedicated the developer is to maintaining and fixing any issues that might arise with TapForms over time. He’s very commited to the product both for OS X and iOS. I have them both and love them both, using them frequently. As I outline below, this is a really great database app that’s easy to use, very powerful when you need that, syncs without any problems when you need that and as others have said, it just works. I consider software like this to be a thing of beauty. I know from my own software development background what a lot of work it is to design, develop, test and maintain software this good. It is easily worth every single penny it costs and really considerably more in my opinion. It’s a real bargain which I appreciate even more given the lack of any significant competition to it. Previous Review: Being retired I do not personally have need of the powerful features a small business user would take advantage of in Tap Forms but a visit to their website will fill you in on those. My usage falls into the Personal or Home User catagory of keeping a home inventory, collection databases, etc. This App is just wonderful for this in that while powerful in its feature set it truly is easy to become acclimated to and start using for one’s own databases. I’ve been using it since the previous version and have encountered zero bugs or any other problems. Early on I was a little confused about how to do something and wrote to support. I got a prompt reply with just the help I needed. Support is excellent. In this new version I love how i can now set a color for the form background as desired. It really spruces up the look of my form views and it is easy to change anytime if you like. I know it is a little thing compared to important functionality features but for me being able to make my forms more aesthetically pleasing is a big plus. I’m very happy about this. This app does everything I want and it is so easy to do it too. Database creation, form design, searching, creating saved searches and printing are all simple tasks in Tapforms. I’ve found iCloud sync works flawlessly as well. I like that I have control over how it backs up my data automatically for me. I opt to auto-backup all the data except for pictures regularly for speed. Every now and then I create a manual backup that includes the pictures I have in every record. Although everything is in iCloud as well as locally (given how iCloud works) I like to save my manual backups off to an external USB drive for safekeeping. On top of it all, Time Machine is backing this stuff up as well to another external drive. Yes, I value my data and my time, a lot. As a former Bento user I consider this a big upgrade. It worked flawlessly in importing a sizable database with photos for every record too. I was afraid that was going to be painful but it wasn’t at all. So if you’ve been hanging on to Bento which is now having issues in Yosemite and as you know if you use it has been discontinued, this is your salvation right here and then some. This app absolutely deserves my five star rating. If you need a high quality, fully featured, easy to use database app for either home or small business use, look no further. Tap forms is an outstanding value for the money.

Still my favorite!

Still my favorite database application with perfect synchronisation across my Mac and iPad - It gets better with every release; love it !!

It just works

There are so few reasonably priced and straightforward database options out there anymore. So my expectations were low. But Tap Forms is surprisingly capable, flexible, easy to get into and on top of that has seamless cross-device support with my iPad and iPhone. So glad I found this!

Generally great except for sync

I imported my Bento database with no issues and have been using the Tap Forms-specific features which are all quite excellent. Syncing between my Mac and iPhone has been an issue, though. I keep on resetting the sync but it inevitably fails. I needed a password that was on my iPhone database recently and could not complete my task beause the database had not properly synced from my Mac! Frustrating! I’ve been hoping that they would fix this issue but after several upgrades and not seeing a fix I feel it necessary to report it here. Perhaps this will give them some additional motivation : )

Loving Tap Forms!

I was a Bento user and this was the best choice for replacing it. In the beginning the learning curve was challenging, but then to control any software there is lots to learn. Once I got my MacBook Pro, iMac, and iPhone synced up - took some tooling - I quickly became a solid believer in Tap Forms. Brendan’s email responses to any and all of the above was quick and thorough. No doubt it will continue to get better. Suggestions? None that I know of now. I don’t have an issue with dropping photos (I use backup and sync continuously on close and startup - never needed a restore but it’s there if needed). For $35 it’s an awesome DB. Keep it going Brendan!

App is great

however, TECH SUPPORT is superlative. My hubby and I bought Tap Forms in 2009. We now have the apps for iPhone. iPad and Mac versions. We have created at least 11 databases. Brendan (app developer) hasn’t failed me. He is very accommodating. I have NO qualm of recommending Tap Forms. In fact, the majority of my friends own Tap Forms.

A useful data base with great support.

As a former Bento user, I was happy to find a data base program to replace it which would easily import my Bento files and have a brief learning curve. The support and helps are excellent, and I was up and running quickly. I have been using Tap Forms for almost two years, since Bento bit the dust. I have it on my Mac, my iPhone, and my iPad. I find it quick and easy, and every update adds useful features. If you are looking for a general use data base for Mac that does the job, looks good, and works easily so you can focus on your data and not how to work the program, this is it. When I have run into an issue, I have gotten quick and clear responses from customer care. Usually within an hour. Refreshing! Highly recommended.

Wonderful!

I’ve been using Bento for years, and a few years back switched to Tap Forms. It took the forms I had already designed and made them work. With Bento I could not use my “all-years” database, which contains my 30+ years of business invoices. Tap Forms imported them perfectly, and I now can use all my data. The only feature that I miss is not being able to email a form, or print the form to PDF that can be emailed. Thanks very much for a wonderful product!

Excellent app, and amazing customer service

I purchased this app, along with both iOS versions, for use on a Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone. I’ve used databases for years, from Palm to Appleworks and beyond. TapForms is without a doubt the most flexible, stable and reliable. iCloud synching has been flawless. The developer stays on top of any needed adjustments when any Mac or iOS updates come around, and has responded quickly and clearly to any questions I’ve had.

Best Database software for small businesses

Count me in as another happy user of Tap Forms! I run a small business building websites and doing SEO work, and need to constantly update multiple accounts with new "fields" and change things across several clients information at once. Spreadsheets are not a good option when you have to add a new "field" across 100+ accounts at once, a good database is key! Like many others I didn't need the size & complexity (or cost) of Filemaker, and was a happy user of Bento for years (although never totally satisfied with Bento's iOS offerings). When Filemaker ceased development of Bento, I looked around for a solution, and found something that is actually better than Bento was! It syncs better with things like the built in Contacts, the iPad and iPhone apps work really well, and support from the developer is awesome, something Bento never had! The only things that kept me from giving a 5 star rating, are a few small annoyances. There are a few quirks with the "layout designer" that make it a bit cumbersome to use - headings can't be selected or "copied & pasted"and some functions like "default value" doesn't actually give a text field any default value. But these are small gripes in an excellent product that I use daily in my business, and Tap Forms is an essential part of my work flow! Highly recommended!

TapForms our saviour!

3.5.9 shows how dedicated the developers of this app are! They are constantly paying attention to the activity and users using this app and sincerely works to ensure a problem-free product. TapForms has not only been our Bento replacement, but saved us from having to pay costly fees for professional software when TapForms itself is professional. We are a full service web design firm and we use TapForms to maintain client data, internet logins, and payment method information. It’s sync with dropbox is KEY so we don’t have to worry about having the latest data and a crashless app ensures reliability and dependability! Thank you TapForms!

Used to be Great. Now Syncing Issues ruins it!

Used to be Great. Now Syncing Issues ruins it! 1. Used to be a solid database. Now Syncing is difficult to setup and keeps corrupting so that I have to continually reset syncing on all devices. FIX THIS ASAP!!! Sync should be easy and smooth as butter, not this complicated. Syncing now ruins this product. 2. Another issue I’ve had since the early days of this database is the concept of using pick lists. Pick list are great but sometimes I need need only drop down lists. Better yet make the ability to set pick lists up to be local to a database form or universal to all database forms. Sometimes I dont want to pollute my universal pick list list with a list only used once in a single form. Fix these and stars go back up. No. 1 is Sync! Fix this first.

Sync issues!!

Well, this a very nice app and works reasonably well. It is essentially one of two decent database apps that sync using iCloud between Macs and iDevices (the other is Ninox). I am getting frustrated with the times I get sync errors and restting and resyncing my devices. Not sure how Ninox does it, but that app certainly has less sync issues. I really hope this issue get fixed soon!

Just what I Need

Tap Forms does everything I need. Securely saving log-in and account information. Even my Credit Card info. The one weak area is iCloud sync. It works, but it seems like I need to manually reset it all the time. I have other Mac/iOS apps that sync flawlessly via iCloud … but of course they are not as secure. So I am willing to under go a little pain for secure encryption. FWIW - I got bit by the corrupted application bug. I deleted Tap Forms and reinstalled all my data was still there without having to resync. Of course I also had an iCloud backlup and a backup in DropBox (and YOU should too) so I didn’t have much to lose but a little time (your experience may be different)

Nicely done program

I needed this app as a substitute for Bento which no longer is supported. This is a well done application whch is better in some ways than Bento—has multiple search functions on the mobile app, has a better looking interface , but lacks some of Bento’s printing and viewing features. This application is produced by a one-man operation in Calagary so no one can expect him to compete with Filemaker’s resources. But he has done an admirable job and is supper attentive to support requests. This program is a very good value and maybe the best consumer level database for Mac users.

The app states that it is damaged and to delete and download again.

What kind of nonsense is this. If I delete the app I will lose all my data. Is this really their recommendation. Why was it damaged, I did nothing unusual. I would not recommend this app if the only solution is to delete the app and all the data that I have collected for the last few years. Find another solution.

HELP! Now my app is “damaged” and I can’t open it.

If I delete the app and download it again, will my content still be there? I don’t know what to do! Was working until last update.

It just keeps getting better and better!

I’ve used the last several versions of this app up to and including 3.5.7 from its release, and have found that its power continues to grow by leaps and bounds. It easily handles my multi-thousand record database with its 11 fields of various types on down to my smallest ones (some of the smaller ones having even more fields), and any time I’ve had issues with it, I’ve either been able to fix them myself using the very clear online help manual or if there’s something not covered to get VERY prompt and capable help from the developer in absolutely minimal time. The developer, Brendan Duddridge, absolutely stands behind his product and he really knows his way around a Mac (or iPhone) as well. The app itself continues to be more and more bulletproof and stable with each release in my experience. I highly recommend it.

Awesome Support

First, it is the best thing, within a respectable price range, to any Access Database. The opportunities to create are endless. It does take some getting used to and I can tell you from experience that I messed up the first couple of times and lost some data. However, the support is untimely. Went on the website and emailed the support with a question and received initial reply within minutes. At first I thought it was just an automated reply but then realized it wasn’t. Right there, Brendan and I figured out what the solution was and my error. The entire process was done within 20 minutes…that is from my initial request. You cannot find support like that very often in today’s world.

The Best DB App in the Apple Store

This is by far the best personal database app in the app store. You can make countless different form templates. The developer is patient and responsive to support questions. If you like the Mac app, he also has iOS apps that syncronize via iCloud or Dropbox.

Great Personal Database

I think a lot of people felt “left out in the lurch” when Bento was discontinued (and Bento frankly never worked that well anyway). In my opinion, this is definitely the best replacement. I’m not looking for expensive, high-end complicated database features as much as just storing information in a way that is easy to access. The iOS and Mac OS X versions both work well and sync well. The developer is responsive and fixed a bug I reported.

A great personal Data Base

Bought Tap Forms last year, but didn’t really start using it till now. Was using Apple’s Bento which is no longer supported, and now crashes in El Capitan 10.11 during sync. Had to clean up some of the data, and found it is better to just export bento data to excel/numbers. Used that to clean up the data before importing straight to Tap Forms. I have both mac and IOS versions, and appreciate the encryption before transferring through iCloud. Unlike bento, I am able to synchronize to all my apple devices. I am able to do everything in Tap Forms in almost the same way I was doing it in Bento. Small learning curve, but didn’t take long to understand the differences. Keep up the support, and the stars will always be a five!

Best alternative to Bento

I checked out a number of possible replacements for Bento and Tap Forms was clearly the best one. I imported my Bento form and database quickly and easily. Tech support from the app developer is fast and personal. What more can you ask for? So far, it’s working very well. Highly recommended.

Great App – Update Broken

Moved to TapForms when Bento was discontinued. Great app. The El Capitan update crashes as soon as I input my passcode. I’m sure there will be a fix soon.

Very good and improving

Easy to grasp and easy to use. Combines simplicity and common sense operation. Sync between devices was twitchy in early versions, but has been improving steadily. Well supported by dedicated developer. iOS and OS X versions on par with each other. I’d like to see a more distinctve dock icon. It can be difficult to locate in the dock.

The best personal database available for Mac

I was a serious Bento user. After the announcement that Bento was being discontinued, I panicked, then started looking for a replacement. But try as I might nothing came close to the ease of use or the features of bento. I tried HanDBase, iDatabase, and Filemaker Pro. HanDBase, was pretty good but difficult to set up and use, and the user manual was worthless. iDatabase was not fully functional from a reporting or searching standpoint, and difficult to use, not intuitive at all. And Filemaker Pro, while very capable of doing anything and everything, was very expensive and way to difficult to learn, ( Imean a serious learning curve). Enter Tap Forms… in the beginning I had my issues with it as well, there were some things it wouldn’t do, and it was very different than Bento in ease of use, but the one thing that sold me on Tap Forms is the developer. He’s always available, I mean this guy doesn’t sleep, he’s always been available whenever I have a question, and he has continued to develop the product to the point that it is outstanding. Several times I’ve requested a feature and he comes back with I’m working on that or that is scheduled for a future update. Tap forms works for me, and it sync’s with my iPhone and iPad in the cloud, all you have to do is hit sync and your other devices are immediately updated, (well almost immediately, really fast). There are a few things that were easier to do with Bento, but with the current development of Tap Forms, I’m confident that in a very short time, Tap Forms will be far superior to Bento, and the support is unmatched. It really is the only choice if you’re looking for a portable database that you can work with on your mobile device away from the office and return and sync every thing up to your desktop. Update 10/2/2015: This morning was another example of outstanding customer support. I upgrade to OS X 10.11 El Capitan over night and when I came in this morning Tap Forms wouldn’t work, I sent an email to the developer and in less than 5 minutes, I had my answer, and it was working just like that, put a check in a box. Thank you Tap Forms, you just keep getting better, and your customer service remains awesome. Sure beats trying to get a hold of somebody from Filemaker.

Wonderful Substitute for Bento!

I had used Bento for many years, and was disappointed to learn when they were getting rid of it. I downloaded a number of alternate database apps that I hoped would be similar to Bento. After reviewing four of them, I hit upon Tap Forms and knew it was the one. Powerful, easy to use, ability to import all Bento lists, have all the Import/Export features that I need. Syncs well with IOS devices which is a necessity for me. Cusomter service is the best I’ve ever experienced with a third party app developer. My emails are answered very quickly, and my questions have always been answered. The PDF User’s Manual, for both Mac and IOS, is very well done…but now and then there’s a detail that I can’t find. The deeloper listens…many customer ideas end up in the next update of the app! Extremely professional, personal and knowledgeable staff. Try to filter out the single, one-star, rating criticism. I’m sure they have a point at their specific level of use. However, concentrate on mountain of very favorable ratings…including the 160 under “All Versions.” You can see this is a top notch program for the great majority of users!

Feature Request

I’ve used FileMaker since version 2.0 and used Bento during its lifetime for lighter weight situations. Been retired for a few years and FM Pro usage is way down (and updates are expensive). Found TAP when looking for a Bento replacement and I am very happy with it. It is so much faster than Bento and synchs very speedily. In most respects, it is what Bento could have been if Apple had enthusiasm to really develop it. That being said, I would like to see two features added. One would be to add an Edit choice in the popup for a Pick List field so that one could, with one click, enter the Edit mode for adding a value to that particular pick list. (as opposed to the “where was that again?” routine that wastes lots of time….). The other is, since iCloud is being used, to make syncing automatic so that I would be confident that my iOS devices are up to date when I walk out the door.

Good replacement for Bento, but a few heads-up

First, once I got used to the nomenclature and flow of Tap Forms, it works nearly as good as Bento. That “nearly” is because of a couple of things. 1) It does not sync seamlessly. Be careful to make certain you sync any changes on your iPhone/ipad back to the cloud prior to opening it on your Mac. Same thing going the other direction (Mac->iphone.) 2) It “hangs” up every now and then, particularly on the computer, such that modifying or working in the forms is interrupted. Close it down; open it back up and everything is back to normal. 3) The view on the handheld device does not look nearly as good, or flow quite as well, as Bento did. Maybe they’ll come along on that. Otherwise, I use it every day, multiple times a day. Just hope they continue with upgrades to get it where it should ultimately be.

Inept and Dangerous

I’m a user of both Filemaker and Bento and I often want to give this a serious shot at replacing both since it’s feature-set is squarly in the middle, a sweetspot I, and many others, crave in a personal database. I regret to say that this software is both inept and dangerous. In using Tap Forms, even for a short while, I encounter numerous problems such as missing records, deleted records from syncing, syncing which doesnt’ work. I have also encountered data encyption errors involving field based encryption where changing the password resulted in lost data. After contacting the developer about this particular bug the response was ‘don’t use that feature if it doesn’t work for you, encrypting at the database level is better anyway”. Unbelievable. Also, if I set the database to lock after a few minutes it may work, or may not, depending on the mood of the program at that moment. The bottom line is that Tap Forms is a nice program with good features. It fills a void in Mac database software left by the demise of Bento but Tap Forms is not a suitable replacement for Bento due to it’s vast amount of bugs, inconsistent behavior and spotty syncing. If this changes I will be the first to retract this review but until then this software is not suitable for important data.

An excellent “personal database"

I liked Bento and was disappointed when it was no longer usable. Then I found Tap Forms. It is really easy to create and use databases in Tap Forms. I can sync between my desktop, laptop, iPhone and iPad. The customer support is excellent and I understand that a newer version with even easier sync is in the works.
